Sunday School answers to deep theological questions do not cut it.

Sunday School answers to deep theological questions do not cut it.

A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – The following is a segment of a longer conversation with a secular reader asking a profound question…

Why do you think God would set a standard that we can’t achieve?

My First Response

“The Sermon on the Mount is a classic example of your point. He sets a standard no one could possibly accomplish. The reason is that He demonstrates how sinful we are BUT then offers a solution, which is salvation. Beyond that, I can neither defend nor explain why that was/is His method. As the created, my job is to trust and obey.”

Reader Response – Even More to the Point

“And what happens to those who don’t accept the solution? Punishment? So God created flawed humans and set standards they can’t achieve. He then punishes them for not achieving the standards…unless they turn to the only answer available to avoid that punishment…him.”

My Second Response

“That is correct. One can put Sunday School answers around that, but it changes nothing to the reality of your direct point.”

Reader Response

“The reality of my direct point is one of the things that prevents me from embracing the Christian narrative.”

My Third Response – Empathy

“I know, and I understand. And, I remember how I treated Christians and what I thought of them, before I got saved.”

In the end it all comes down to faith….

Hebrews 11:1 – Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
