Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Colossians 1:15, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.”
Background
Wouldn’t it be awesome to be able to be invisible? How cool would it be to be able to disappear whenever you wanted to? Would there be any limit to how you could use this power? Whether for fun or mischief, for good or evil, this ability to appear and vanish would open up all sorts of worlds that one could only dream about previously. Now, imagine that instead of appearing and disappearing as often as you like, you had always been invisible, and now you were finally getting the opportunity to become visible. For the very first time, you were going to be seen. It may not sound quite as thrilling as coming and going like a shadow, but try and fathom the magnitude of the impact that could be made from making your very first appearance ever. How would you do it?
Application
Where would it be? Who would get to witness it? What would you look like? When a baby is born, he in a way transforms from the invisible to the visible. But he doesn’t have any say as to his circumstances. He just shows up when it’s his time. But the first glimpse that all those people get who are waiting for his arrival is unforgettable. It usually is more amazing than anyone expected it to be. Quite frankly, it is as impressive as the superpowers of a superhero. But all of this wonder pales when we consider that Jesus was the image of the invisible God. When the God of eternity decided to become visible, all that had ever been invisible, all that had created everything that could be seen, was made visible in the image of Jesus. That’s the kind of image that’s everything. And that’s the image that we get to reveal through our lives. We know all about the image we want to make as a good dad or a successful boss or a superior athlete or an independent woman, but where in there does the image of God fit in? Where in there are we making sure that the invisible God is shining brighter than the image of our self? Being invisible sounds awesome, but how much more awesome is the privilege to show the world what our invisible God looks like?
Charge
As we seek Him today, let’s put aside our concerns over putting forth the perfect image of ourselves. Let’s concentrate on showing the world what God looks and acts and sounds like.
