Speaking the Truth

Where is evangelism headed in America?

Words of Wisdom from the Babylon Bee – This is an image sent into the Bee by a reader. It obviously expresses the truth that a belief in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as both our Savior and Lord, is the only way to avoid the eternal burn of a real and literal Hell.

For many, including Christians, this form of “evangelism” is considered too confrontational and therefore ineffective.

For those old enough, there was a time when door-to-door evangelism was an accepted practice. There was Evangelism Explosion, Romans Road, 3 Circles, the Hand Method, and so many others. It was all about approaching people and opening a conversation with the intended purpose of sharing the Gospel message, hence the concept of personal “confrontational evangelism.” This method is still successfully employed in countries where Christianity is in its infancy, but no longer in America. So, churches (which are nothing more than Christians grouping together) resort to less invasive methods such as the image in this post. The ploy is the same … either accept the Son or prepare to burn.

However, Paul does make the clear point that we are all drawn to Christ in different ways. And, in his own ministry, stated clearly …

1 Corinthians 9:22 – To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

Today, in America, the best we can say is that friendship or relationship evangelism has replaced confrontational evangelism. Taking the time to build connections through care and service to the lost so that one has some level of credibility when introducing Christ has replaced beating people over the head with the Bible. However, sadly, the most significant growth in “evangelism” has not been either relationship or confrontational, but lifestyle evangelism. When Christians are kind and compassionate with those in our circle of influence, but never have the courage to offer the source of our motivation (the Holy Spirit), we waste an eternal opportunity.

1 Peter 3:15 – But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.
