Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Exodus 3:4, “When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, ‘Moses! Moses!’ And Moses said, ‘Here I am.'”
Background
I’m going to venture to say that you will see something today that you have seen at least a hundred times before. Maybe thousands. And I’m fairly certain that you will do things today that you have been doing for months, or even years. The same things, the same way, time and time again. And that’s not always a bad thing. There are good reasons why tasks are performed a certain way or objects that we see are designed a particular way. For a shepherd, I could imagine that playing out in the daily routine of herding the sheep from field to field. The grass from one hill would be left for the greener, less eaten grass of another. The watering hole would change as they moved further down the brook or returned closer to home. The shepherd would fend off the occasional attack from a wild animal, lead the sheep in to be sheared or slaughtered, and become very familiar with the life and ways of living and working outdoors. Harsh storms, challenging terrain, and all that the desert could throw at you would become old hat after years of working as a shepherd.
Application
But I doubt that many things caught on fire but didn’t burn up. So when Moses sees a bush doing just that, he is understandably curious and goes over to check it out. And then the bush starts talking to him. Working with sheep for almost forty years, he probably thought a few of them were talking to him from time to time. But never a non-burnt bush that’s on fire. And amazingly, Moses goes on to have an intense, life-changing conversation with this bush. The fire caught his eye, and then the Lord captured his attention. And if we will look at what we have seen so many times before, we might notice that a bush is burning but not being consumed. And if we’ll let it draw us closer, we might even hear the voice of God calling out to us. From the co-worker who is overwhelmed. Or the neighbor who doesn’t know where to turn. Or the brother in Christ who is suffering from loneliness. Or the Bible sitting on our nightstand. So look again, and this time really see what is there.
Charge
As we seek Him today, look around you to see and hear God calling out to you. Look with eyes that want to see, and listen with ears that want to hear.
