Words of Wisdom from the Babylon Bee – ‘We Don’t Have Money In The Budget To Tithe,’ Says Family Currently Spending $30K Per Year On Travel Baseball.
Webster defines tithe as, “a tenth part of something paid as a voluntary contribution or as a tax especially for the support of a religious establishment.”
So the actual word “tithe” means ten percent and is found exclusively in the Old Testament law (ex. Leviticus 27:30-32), which Jesus fulfilled at His coming (Romans 10:4). However, both testaments have a great deal to say about giving in general. For us today, verses such as those below apply…
1 Corinthians 6:2 - Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases?
2 Corinthians 9:7 - Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
Remember the widow’s mite…
Mark 12:42-44 - And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
We are called to give sacrificially to the Lord, with our time, or talents (gifting), and our talents (money).
Matthew 6:21 - For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
