“How did God stop the sun?

Is the Bible riddled with errors or are we missing the deeper point on God's omnipotence?

Quote Source – Two Medium Readers

A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – The concept of Biblical inerrancy is one of the major stumbling blocks in accepting a Biblical Christian worldview. Two of the many verses in the Bible that unbelievers draw attention to come from the book of Joshua and Matthew.

Joshua 10:12-14 - Summarizing... the sun stopped in the middle of the sky for about 24 hours.
Matthew 4:8 - Summarizing... the "kingdoms of the world" could be seen by Jesus and Satan from the top of a single mountain.

Biblical Inerrancy

Inherency of the Bible – Summarizing… how can the Bible be without error if it says that God stopped the sun, and Jesus and Satan could see the whole world from the top of a mountain?

My Response

Mankind understandably views everything through the lens of human logic and the scientific method (observation, skepticism and the ability to reproduce consistent results). Since no one has ever stopped the sun or seen the entire world from a mountain top, to the logical mind, these statements must be false because they cannot be observed, much less reproduced.

However, if one believes there was a Creator God who created the universe and all that is contained within it…

Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth....

The question becomes, why is it so hard to imagine that same God able to stop the rotation of a single planet (earth) for a day, or to see a panoramic view of the entire planet from the top of a single mountain? And those are just two relatively small examples that touch on the omnipotence of the Trinity.

The Scientific Method

The Bible is replete with miracles, prophesies fulfilled, and other evidence of the power of God vs the shallowness of man’s methods of determining truth. Remember, it was not until the mid-1800s that “spontaneous generation” was finally rejected as the only answer to maggots appearing on rotting meat. Prior to that, using the “scientific method,” it was understood that living matter (maggots) could arise from non-living matter (rotting meat). Today that view is considered a “superseded scientific theory,” meaning that inventions such as the microscope proved it to be incorrect.

Of course, we laugh at past beliefs such as spontaneous generation and consider ourselves enlightened to such as degree that today’s science holds no such fallacies. But there is no reason to believe that some scientific theories in vogue today will be laughed at in 100 years as well. We are the created who often can’t remember what we had for dinner last week. God is the omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent supreme Creator.

Isaiah 55:8 “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.

A Biblical Christian Worldview

As I have said so many times… it is all about faith. One either believes there is a God of the universe or not. Once the supernatural is accepted by faith, the rest falls neatly into place, including the Biblical challenges offered above. If one relies on human logic and current science, then half the Bible falls by the wayside, not just a few verses on the sun or mountain views. Every one of us will make a choice, to believe on faith or to reject based on logic. Sadly, the default position is secular human-based logic. We need to actively accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior or accept the eternal consequences. The significance of that one decision in all of life is worth serious reflection.
