Words of Wisdom from the Babylon Bee – in March of 2022, Baptist Global News did an article on the disappearance of church choirs across America. In 2009, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary closed its sixty-five year old “School of Church Music and Worship” while Southwestern and Southeastern Baptist Seminaries followed their lead some years later.
It seems graduate studies in music for Worship leaders has given way to broader training in other areas of ministry as job descriptions for these staff members now often include areas such as Youth Pastor, Assimilation Pastor, and Administrative responsibilities. If there are no students signing up for a program, there is no place for for seminary professors in these areas.
Perhaps more to the reality of church services in America, choirs and orchestras have largely become the standard for dying churches that are made up of older, controlling members who hold a death grip on church tradition.
The health of a church depends on families, not octogenarians. However, in all the transition from handbells to rock stars and from organs to light shows, we must not forget why we are attending church in the first place. It is to worship God and not ourselves.
