When you search on the word “Christian” on Medium.com

Deconstruction is what is offered in return.

According to the purveyor of all knowledge, Wikipedia, in 2016 (the most recent data they have), there were 7.5 million posts published on the platform and 60 million readers. The Small Business Blog (whoever they are) has determined that Medium.com currently has 100 million monthly visitors who spend 4.5 million hours reading and responding to blogs. They believe Medium is currently valued at $600 million. Finally, Zoominfo estimates Medium’s annual revenue to be $54.1 million.

The point is that it is a very active and growing platform open to a myriad of topics, including religion.

If you go to the Medium.com site (which has both free and paid options), in the top left-hand corner of the home page there is a “Search” field. Below is a list of the first ten posts that appear from a search of the word “Christian”.

  • 7 Truths Christian Scholars Acknowledge, But Evangelicals Reject – Tanner the Humanist
  • Why I’m No Longer a Biblical Christian – Nils von Kalm
  • When Christianity Lost Christ – Gary L. Ellis
  • 14 Truly Horrendous Christian Book Covers You Won’t Believe Exist – Paul Walker
  • How Zoroastrianism Quietly Shaped Christianity – Peter Mansfield
  • Want to Know What Modern Christian Theocracy Looks Like? – Elanor R.L. in Deconstructing Christianity
  • When “Critical Race Theory” Came for Me at My Small Christian College – Erick Sierra
  • 13 Terrible Christian Signs That Make You Say, ‘Wait, What?’ – Paul Walker

Besides the call-out on the word “Biblical Christian” which is the first time I have seen our term used in the title of an article on Medium, most, but not all of these posts are anti-Biblical Christian. Medium uses undisclosed algorithms to prioritize results and I believe their only real goal is serving up what they think their readers want to see, not necessarily an internal bias. These are the writers who get the most attention (claps and comments) from readers interested in the the subject, “Christian,” on the platform.

By the way, the eleventh on the list was entitled “I Will Never Tolerate Christian Nationalists” and included a closeup picture of a hand with a prominent middle finger pointed at the reader.

Medium is a largely anonymous place for people to express their opinions without repercussions. For some, it is a form of escape, for others, it is a place to vent. The sad truth is that, as a microcosm of society, we are drifting away from the rock of Christ as found in an inerrant love letter from God, and a solid Bible-believing church.
