“From the perspective of the characters (our view), we have free will. But from the perspective of the author (God), everything is foreordained. Point being, I think both free will and predestination can co-exist at the same time and be quite non-contradictory. After all, when God gives Israel their instruction manual in Deuteronomy, He already knows that they will fail to keep it (Deut 31:16-17).”
My Response
All valid points and frankly the reconciliation of predestination vs. foreknowledge vs. free-will is way above my pay grade. However, Tolkien was not looking for anything from his characters in the book he wrote.
God, on the other hand, is looking for a relationship with His children. Can God have a relationship with mankind if He is the Author of the story of our lives and can write anything He wants, as Tolkien did?
Frodo was not given an instruction manual for life (the Bible) by Tolkien as we are. I believe the reason was that God, in some cases of which we don’t know when… exhibits foreknowledge rather than predestination (foreordained). He is looking for a relationship, not a book character.
