Some Christians who have a solid, Biblically-based faith, don’t have to explain or defend it because they keep their heads down at their jobs and other mixed social gatherings. However, when it comes to anonymous platforms like social media, it can be the Wild, Wild West of anger, confusion, twisted theology and verbal chaos.
On Medium.com, we respond to comments from many atheists and agnostics who ask reasonable questions about Christian sin and God’s apparent indefensible actions (from a secular viewpoint), given His omnipotence. Frankly, even though I came to Christ through apologetics, ultimately we all have to rely on faith to answer those questions.
One of the main Sunday School answers to original and continuing sin is that mankind needs to have the option to do evil so that we understand what it means to love. Perhaps the relationship between Adam/Eve and God before The Fall was not the relationship God ultimately intended between the Trinity and mankind. However, in Heaven there will also be no sin, yet we know from the Bible that there will be a continuous expression of love and worship of God. Perhaps the memory of our exposure to evil on earth will suffice as a reminder of the sacrifice Christ made for us as the foundation for our love of Him in Heaven. The point is that Sunday School answers do not always work when one is discussing the Creator of the universe with a thoughtful, unsaved individual. A verse I often quote is…
Hebrews 11:1 — Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen
What may begin as an acknowledgment that there must be a Creator, is then followed by a sincere desire to seek the truth found in the Bible. However, the logic of fulfilled prophecy, and unexplained miracles such as the resurrection of Christ, must ultimately move from one’s head knowledge to a faith from the heart.
