We are Saved from God’s Judgement

Walk in thankfulness for God's grace and mercy that saves us from His righteous judgment.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from 2 Samuel 15:15, ” And the king’s servants said to the king, ‘We are your servants, ready to do whatever my lord the king commands.’ ”

Background

I received a letter in the mail a few weeks ago, and according to the instructions, I have to make a phone call tonight. In fact, I’m supposed to call any time after 5:30pm to learn whether or not my number has been chosen. Unfortunately, I’m not calling to redeem a prize or save 15% on my insurance. I’m calling to find out if I have to show up tomorrow at the courthouse for jury duty. This time makes the fourth opportunity for service that I have had since becoming a registered voter many years ago. One time I called, and my number was not one of the chosen few. Another time, I wrote a letter to be excused. But my first time, I had to show up. But even though I did, there was still a chance that I would not be needed. Some were actually sent home, a by-product of the process of gathering more than needed to ensure that enough showed up. But not me. Once they moved us into the courtroom, the selection process for the trial began. And this time, all but twelve would be going home. One by one, names were called, and those summoned would answer a few questions from the lawyers as they attempted to construct a jury that seemed most fair to them. Finally, the twelfth person was chosen, and I was yet among the onlookers, about to be dismissed. But then, a final person was recused, and I heard the bailiff call my name. That close to making my exit, I was the final person selected.

Application

I don’t know exactly why I was hopeful to be going home early. It’s not like I was super eager to be going to work instead. I guess spending a day with eleven strangers, trying to decide where the truth lie amidst stories told from only one side, didn’t excite me like it might someone else. So, I’m thankful a jury of my peers doesn’t control my destiny. I’m thankful there’s no more guilt to go around. I’m thankful that the judge knows my story better than I do, and that He’s guaranteed my freedom by the name of His own Son. Tomorrow, I might help decide whether someone is convicted. If so, it’ll only make me more aware of all that was taken on my behalf.

Charge

As we seek Him today, walk in thankfulness for God’s grace and mercy that saves us from His righteous judgment.
