Quote Source – Benjamin Franklin
A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – Franklin coined that statement, in 1789, in a letter to a friend (details here). One would think that the certainty of death would be a motivation to deeply explore the various religious traditions that attempt to pierce the veil of the hereafter. However, most go through life oblivious to the unpredictable timing yet guaranteed eventuality of our passing.
Case in point, is a reader who believes Christians should stop talking about “prophecy of the alleged date of the end times” because it is “scaring the life out of people”. Other than the irony of the juxtaposition of those statements, is the deeper reality that people just don’t want to consider their mortality.
My Response…
“Few ‘come to Christ” out of fear so I agree with you in principle. However, if you believed that your mom or dad, brother or sister, close friend, or coworker was at their death bed and you believed, without a shadow of a doubt, that the decision we make in this life regarding salvation through a personal relationship with Jesus was the only path to eternity in Heaven and, the alternative was very bad…. what level of intensity would you have to let your opinion be known to that person? I would respectfully offer the observation that 99% of the pushiness of contemporary Christians in America falls far short of that level of concern over others.”
Her Response is a window into the reality of avoidance by those who the Lord is not drawing to Himself…
“Thanks for your reply. Short answer is, l don’t, so l can’t really answer that . In the end, l trust all will be well and that’s enough for me.”
