Ask What Jesus Thinks We Need

Pray that the Lord will bless us with need. Ask Him to take away the fluff so that we can come to Him with the stuff that really matters. Ask for eyes to see what His Word says is important.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Matthew 20:32, ” So Jesus stood still and called them, and said, ‘What do you want Me to do for you?’ “

Background

Wow, where has this verse been hiding? We’ve been hearing so much about serving and sacrificing, about emptying ourselves and doing all we can for the Lord, that we haven’t thought much about what Jesus could do for us, have we? With pure and humble intents, we have been trying to set our hearts to the Lord’s plow and get our eyes off of dancing stars and silly bandz and any other wood, hay or stubble on television or in the stores that so readily fills our minds and captures our attention. But what an interesting scene to see Jesus stop during His travels, with a multitude of people following Him, and talk to two people who were in need. So, imagine you were one of those two who were able to get His attention. If He asked you what you wanted Him to do for you, what would you say? How would you choose from your laundry list of wants and desires which one wish to present to the Lord for Him to do for you? Perhaps even the two people were you and your spouse? What single request would you ask of Jesus as He stood before you, a chasm separating His holiness from your sinfulness, yet His arms open wide as He reaches out to you? The two people in the story were blessed with one clear need – they were blind. They knew Jesus was the Lord and the Messiah, but what they needed were the eyes to follow Him. Their heart was convinced, but they wanted to follow Jesus, not just sit around and hear about Him. Their ears worked great, and their feet were fine, but they wanted to see the Savior and get in His game.

Application

Now, it would be tough to have one shot at choosing what to ask Jesus for. We think we need so many things that we would hate to leave something off. So maybe what we need to start asking is that He would show us what we lack. We should ask Him to bless us with a clear vision of our inadequacies. If only being blind were our biggest problem. Perhaps our greatest need is to know just what we need.

Charge

As we seek Him today, pray that the Lord will bless us with need. Ask Him to take away the fluff so that we can come to Him with the stuff that really matters. Ask for eyes to see what His Word says is important.
