Angelic Protection
But the question remains, do we have angels specifically assigned to us for protection?
The Bible makes it clear that angels do protect mankind (Daniel 6:20-23, 2 Kings 6:13-17), guide us in decision-making (Matthew 1:20-21, Acts 8:26), and offer communication from God (Luke 1:11-20, Matthew 2:13-15).
In Daniel 12:1, the archangel Michael is referred to as a protector of God’s people. And Matthew 8:10 references children who have angels who are in constant contact with God.
Angels not only speak to and protect humanity, but they can also appear in a physical form to accomplish God’s commands (Genesis 18:1-8, Matthew 28:2-6, Acts 12:7-10).
The bottom line is that God uses angels for many things, including watching over mankind. However, it remains to be seen whether specific angels have extended responsibilities to provide protection to specific individuals, as this is not mentioned in the Bible.
Demon Possession
When it comes to demons, the Bible does provide more clarity. In the first two chapters of Job, God allowed Satan and his minions to direct an attack on Job. In Daniel 10, spiritual forces, or “princes,” seemed to be connected to specific countries or locations. There was a specific group of demons (Legion) who had invaded the demoniac found in Mark 5:1-20. When one considers that the Bible provides examples of demon possession, it is easy to assume that specific demons are involved with specific individuals.
Conclusion
Angels can physically appear, speak to and guide people but are not necessarily assigned to an individual. There is no evidence in Scripture that they possess people. The Holy Spirit is the internal Counselor for the believer, and that is more than sufficient.
Demons can both externally influence and, in certain situations, inhabit people. The only direct evidence of demons perhaps materializing in physical form was in Genesis 3:1-5 as a serpent (Satan) speaking to Eve and in Matthew 4:1-11 when Satan tempted Jesus in the desert.
